TO DO Award 2018 Maquipucuna Ecotourism, Ecuador
The project Maquipucuna Ecotourism in Ecuador promotes the protection of biodiversity through local development and eco-tourism. As part of the project, an area of 6.000 ha was brought under conservation, an eco-lodge with eco-tourism activities was built, and youths received training in programmes on environmental issues. The programme also enables communities to conduct their own eco-tourism and nature protection projects: Economic alternatives are developed, such as eco-tourism, organic agriculture, and the production of coffee, cheese, and jam. Maquipucuna was successful in involving players and communities for the application as a UNESCO biosphere reserve.
