This year, the number of participating tourism projects reached a new record high: 34 applications from 22 countries had been received by the Studienkreis für Tourismus und Entwicklung e.V. by the deadline on 31st August 2017. The majority was from developing and newly industrialised countries that have launched exemplary initiatives for socially responsible tourism worth copying. Two of the three awards for the most convincing projects in 2018 went to Ecuador, one to South Africa
All of these three projects fulfil the main TO DO criterion in an outstanding manner: the participation of the local population in the planning and implementation of tourism projects. The projects create alternative sources of income and strengthen local people’s self-confidence.
A 17-member jury had first nominated the three projects for the TO DO 2018. The Institute for Tourism and Development then sent experts to check the projects on location. All three checks turned out positive without exception, so that on 8 March 2018 at ITB Berlin the projects received the equal awards.
